Traveling to the US with your cell (read "mobile" Europeans) phone can be a costly exercise. For those without a good bank balance or indeed on some half decent roaming plan, the choice is often to go Wi-Fi only. Alternative is to pay those horrific per day international roaming charges. YUCK !
Thankfully T-Mobile has a great solution.
Visitors to the US (Including New York) taking the T-Mobile Tourist Plan will allow allow anyone with an unlocked phone to get a 3-week all-in plan when visiting for just $30. Which is sweet deal, especially as you can still use the many WiFi hot spots throughout the city in MTA Subway stations and on the street.
For security purposes, T-Mobile say Tourist Kits must be shipped to U.S. addresses. We suggest asking friends, family or hotel management to use their address or we can do that for you, just drop us a chat message and we can bring one along on your shoot.
You can always pop into a store and buy them yourself too.
Petapixel recently posted an article about the "selfie" phenomena. The popularity of the selfie stick has been an odd one, maybe a rise that couldn't be grasped by those in the photography trade as it demonizes everything about photography that we cherish. However a recent report kinda confirms what we already knew about "selfies" in the first place.
The original report (which is rather large) was conducted by a German Physiology journal which can be read here but one section contained the following which is a great way to sum up taking a selfie.
“People taking many selfies themselves tend not to like viewing others’ selfie-pictures, and rather wish for a higher number of usual photos,” the report continues “This expresses a somewhat paradox[ical] situation, where many people are engaged in selfies, but at the same time wish for a reduction of selfies in social media.”
Which is a fancy way is saying not even selfie takers like seeing selfies. That brings us onto why you would use them on vacation when many don't want to see them after their vacation anyway, another great reason to hire NY Tourist Photo !
We often get asked which cameras we recommend for travel, which often leads to more questions than answers about whats important to the person releasing the shutter.
So here are a few of the cameras we recommend taking along with you on vacation around the globe, check them out.
Option 1 - Sony alpha a7sII
With the rise of mirrorless cameras (a camera without a flappy mirror inside) the physical size of high quality professional grade cameras has reduced somewhat into more compact fully featured, weapons of mass photography.
So if you're looking for an interchangeable camera and money is no object then the Sony A7SII is a fantastic option, its small, light and great in the dark, retails around $2,000 USD.
Option 2 - pentax k1
If you're looking for a larger, traditional DSLR, the Pentax K1 is nothing short of brilliant.
A large array of features for the "semi-pro" in your party to worry about, as well as a fantastic selection of high quality glass that previous generations of K Mount that will work on this body. It has a sexy articulating screen for those hard to reach shots too.
Its also cheaper than the Sony, at under $1,800 USD, its a great all round package.
option 3 - Leica C
The pocket friendly Leica C is feature rich, has 7x Optical Zoom (28-200mm equivalency) and much more. Plus the ability to move images off the camera via WiFi just like the more expensive cameras above as well being able to film at 1080p at 30fps.
At under $700 USD its an amazing value Leica to boot. A true pocket rocket !
